Polyvinyl Chloride – PVC
What is PVC
Poly (vinyl chloride) is a commercial polymer obtained from vinyl chloride monomer by the vinyl chloride reaction.
PVC or polyvinyl chloride was one of the first plastics produced and is very widely used. It is obtained from salt (57%) and oil or gas (43%).
History
PVC was discovered more than once and by accident at different times in the 19th century. In 1913, German Friedrich Heinrich August Klatte became the first inventor to patent PVC by polymerizing vinyl chloride using sunlight. However, PVC was not used usefully until the 1920s. Later, Waldo Semon, an American industrial scientist, tried to create a synthetic substance that could replace natural rubber, making PVC a more functional material.
